first day of school!

Well, almost!

Yesterday was orientation for the incoming MSW students. Actual classes start next week. They were mostly younger, mostly white, mostly women, mostly straight-vibing, which I think is a function of the school more than of the field itself. There will be a lot of work - a lot - but I think it will be manageable. Still juggling the arrangements between my day job (where I am going half time) and the internship, which will somewhat overlap. After the orientation - 9 AM through 4 PM - I went to get loan stuff figured out. I will get work study for some of my internship hours which will be a huge help. Then registering for classes, getting my ID card, and then my last trip was to the bursar's office to get a print out of what my costs were for the semester. It was at that point that I caught a $1200+ charge on my bill. Turns out that a student is automatically enrolled in the student health plan unless they opt out, which I wasn't clearly informed about. So whew - I just went online this morning and fixed that. Still unable to sign into my email - but the help desk is responding (!) which is nice.

The initials of the school work out to SSC. The giggle factor for this has not been lost on me. I am looking for sweatshirts that don't have the whole school name on them.

Angie is very cute. She bought me a bag of m&m's that is all green m&m's except for one blue one. I am eating them now. :)

so...apparently, i do not react well to citalopram. To those of you who asked me what was wrong with me this past weekend, apparently that was it. I just didn't connect my feeling weird to the increase in that medication. I saw my doctor today and I'm to stop taking it. I'm starting adderall tomorrow morning so if you notice something else weird, do let me know. I'm not the best at noticing that I'm behaving differently.

I'm almost done with my paper. I worked on it at Angie's house on Monday - she made me focus on it and I got about four pages done and I finished the writing today. She also had me send her what I had done so far and she did a lot of editing for me - mostly rearranging because my organizational skills in writing leave a lot to be desired. I still have to write my references and put in her corrections but then i'm done and just need to mail it. It's only 12 pages which I know is shorter than some other people's papers but he didn't give a minimum so hopefully i do alright on it.

I didn't go to knitting tonight because I really needed to work on that paper. Of course, my classes this semester are tuesdays and wednesdays so i won't be back at knitting until winter break.

Angie's called - i gotta go! :)

Flipping out

We've seen lots of online chatter about flipbooks in the last year or so - people using video footage, pulling out key frames and making new school versions of the stick-men adventures from the old days.

back to school purchase

Time to get a portable computer that is actually portable! I am looking at the Asus EEE PC, trying to narrow down between some of the models. Unfortunately I need to get it with Windows loaded, since some of my key applications don't have linux approximations (mostly my palm pilot apps). I did a bit of research on this a while back, but since then there seem to bemore options out there. What I really wish is that there were a store in the area that carries them, but it seems not. I like to be able to touch the things that are going to become my companions!

OK, off to work, where there is yet more pre-school&internship complexities to figure out. Orientation is tomorrow, but of course I woke up today fearing I had overslept and missed it!

I need a gross kitty icon

So I woke up at 5:10 this morning to Bartleby puking on my bed. It was yellow and gross. I started to clean it up before I put on my glasses, but then I saw something moving.

....

He puked up a roundworm! FUCKING GROSS. It's about 3 inches long and has a flat head. There was only one of them. Now I get to take him into the vet's office when they open at 9am (I called the 24-hour emergency vet and they said it would be okay to wait 4 hours or so).

I put it in water in a container to try to preserve it for at least 4 hours. The emergency vet receptionist told me it would be smart to get a fecal sample, too, if he makes a stinky in the next three and a half hours.

I went to bed at 2am because it was the first time I brought Loki home (I picked him up from the adoption clinic at about 7:30pm) and Abbie and I were playing with the two of them (B is still not entirely happy with L's presence). He's all stressed and stuff, but he's still acting his normal self when he's not hissing/growling at L or puking roundorms up in my bed.

Fuck.

sound the bugles...

Retreat. Work is hectic, school arrangements are too up in the air for comfort (even while all the people who could bring clarity are on vacation), and there is an event out in the woods with useful workshops about dealing with challenging clients. I'm all over it!

That does, however, mean that I will be mostly offline from Thursday late morning until Sunday night, and for the majority of that time, unless I drive into town, I won't have cell coverage either. BF-Bear knows where I'll be, and yeah, I might try to traipse up to where there is some wireless to check on things. But probably not!

Arrggghhhh . . . dust . . . .

Lots of thanks to [info]pinksbrat and [info]jcrashad for helping with my classroom and to [info]sirjake495 and [info]historygeek for offering as well. You are all truly friends indeed, and I am feeling much, much better about the amount of work left to do in my room, which is exponentially smaller than when I walked in on Monday.

The bad news? I feel like crap. Sick, spinning-head, sore-throat, dry-mouth crap. And I have chorus practice tonight, the one I've been waiting for all summer, the Mozart sing-through. I'm going, but I may not actually sing. (Kinda sucks, as it's my debut as a soprano). The up-and-working Tivo and new, bigger TV are very small consolations.

Gonna go pick up that TV now, and pray for swift and painless death or recovery. :S

Starlit Jewel

Mostly parking this link here. Starlit Jewel was an album of songs with lyrics from The Lord of the Rings, with some tunes composed by Marion Zimmer Bradley. Two thousand copies were made, and it is long out of print, and not likely to be released again, despite getting universal reviews as the best music ever inspired by LOTR.

The internet being what it is, mp3s are linked from this site, with the command to purchase a copy when/if it ever is released again. And the internet being what it is, I would grab these if you can agree to that stipulation.

Brocelïande (formerly known as Avalon Rising) is the group which put the album together - they have some very nice folk/pagan seasonal albums, which are going onto my amazon wish list.

a former client for whom i helped to write a kick ass cover letter called my boss today to tell her that she had gotten the job and to tell my boss how much she appreciated my helping her even though she had been very rude to me when i was her counselor (she eventually got switched to someone else). from her, that's high praise. i'm glad she got the job - she's smart and she works hard.

when i got home from work, there was a letter waiting for me from angie. she writes the most beautiful letters (i've gotten 2 so far) - they're like the ones you'd read about in a novel or see in a movie. the most perfect love letters, i've never received anything like them.

she came to visit me yesterday evening. she brought me sunflowers. :) she met layla and then we went out to dinner at shiraz where i introduced her to the wonders that are kataif. then, we walked in elm park before returning to my house to spend time before it was time to bring her to the train station. depending on my schedule next week, i may go out there one evening.

oh oops - i need to go let out the dog!

Help!

Is anyone free this week during working hours? I could really use a hand cleaning out my new dust bowl classroom and would be willing to take out to lunch or otherwise show my gratitude to anyone who could help me out even for a couple of hours this week.
